Description: This species has dull gray forewings with darker, charcoal black scalloped am and pm lines and a vague reniform spot as well as some other smaller markings. The hind wing is the same color of gray but lightens considerably towards the base of the wing. There is a darker grey spot in the upper middle part of the lightened area.
Similar species: Many species of Euxoa are similar to Euxoa fumalis but have white or lighter back wings. Those with darker hind wings that co-occur have more elaborate or different patterning on the front wing.
North American Range: Found from southeastern Canada and New England at least to the uplands of Virginia and West Virginia. This species has been documented in Bath County, Virginia.
